Royal Caribbean onboard rules and first-day preparation

The easiest first day is the one with fewer surprises. Understand how the ship works, prepare the documents for your own itinerary and agree on a simple plan with the people travelling with you.

English, the app and finding your way

English is the principal working language on Royal Caribbean. Other language support varies with the itinerary and crew. If someone in your party needs help understanding instructions, do not assume that every activity, youth session or announcement will be available in their preferred language.

Set up the Royal Caribbean app before leaving home, link the booking and familiarise yourself with its maps and programme. Once aboard, identify the muster station and complete the required safety process. A walk to the dining room, cabin and main meeting points is more useful than trying to memorise the entire vessel at once.

SeaPass and purchases

SeaPass connects the guest with the onboard account. Establish who in the party may make purchases and monitor the account during the trip, not only on the final morning. If a charge looks unfamiliar, retain the receipt and ask while the details are still fresh.

Connecting to the ship’s network to use onboard app functions is different from buying internet access. Before choosing a plan, decide whether you need occasional contact with home or several simultaneous connections. Separate included app features from paid internet access before choosing how the group will stay in touch.

Pack for the venues you intend to use

A practical packing approach
SituationWhat to bringWhy it helps
Embarkation afternoonDocuments, essentials and a change suited to your first activity in hand luggage. You may reach public spaces before your checked bag arrives.
Dinner and a showClothes suitable for the restaurant and any announced dress theme.Pool clothing and an evening venue have different expectations.
Sports and attractionsAppropriate footwear and clothes for the activity.A place in the queue does not replace participation requirements.
Port visitsClothing suited to the weather and places you intend to visit.A beach stop, a religious site and a city walk require different preparation.

Dress Your Best evenings are an opportunity to dress up, but the actual programme and venue requirements should guide the suitcase. Do not pack for a fixed number of formal nights copied from another sailing. A comfortable evening outfit you enjoy wearing is more useful than clothes selected only for a photograph.

Smoking and alcohol: do not infer the rule from the cabin

Smoking is restricted to designated areas; a private balcony does not make it a smoking space. This matters when selecting accommodation: booking a balcony will not solve a need for a permitted smoking area. Read the ship’s directions for cigarettes and electronic cigarettes.

Alcohol rules depend on the embarkation region and can differ at private destinations. A young adult’s ability to book or travel does not automatically establish the ability to buy alcohol. If this affects your group, consult the rules for the actual sailing before purchasing a package.

Accessibility needs an itinerary-wide plan

A cabin described as accessible is only one part of the journey. Consider doorways, bathroom use, storage and charging of mobility equipment, distances to the venues you will use and the arrangements for going ashore. Tender ports can present a different challenge from a pier where the ship is alongside.

Tell the cruise line about specific requirements at booking and ask for the dimensions and arrangements that matter to you. Keep equipment out of corridors and arrange any required support for daily living rather than assuming the crew provide personal care.

Before leaving home

  • Check travel-document requirements for every traveller’s nationality and each relevant country.
  • Keep the booking reference, transport details and important contact information accessible offline.
  • Confirm any documents needed when a minor travels without a parent.
  • Agree on a named meeting place and time in case a phone is unavailable.

For younger travellers, infant eligibility and family cabin arrangements need to be settled before transport is booked. If a document issue or change of plan could prevent travel, establish the cancellation deadlines that apply to your reservation before one passes.
